High Speed Broadband for Everyone: Coming Soon
Posted by JanetM in Super Fast Internet Providers on March 8th, 2010
The news that Google plans to test a fiber optic network capable of delivering speeds of up to 1 gigabit per second has certainly rocked the world of cyberspace. Google has asked for communities to nominate themselves to be home of the pioneer network that will be faster than anything Americans currently have. The timing of this announcement is pretty concurrent with the FCC’s plan to have high speed broadband available to all Americans within the next ten years. To do this, the FCC proposes using the Universal Service Fund, which currently is set up to assure that all Americans have access to a basic telephone line. At the present time, this fund is used to provide internet service to health networks in rural locations, and subsidizes internet services to education. Funding currently comes from surcharges on phone bills, and would be used to only subsidize one broadband service in any given area.
